Welcome to our 2012
Sustainability and Responsibility Report.
Making a True DifferenceTM is the way we define sustainability and responsibility at Tim Hortons.
We are continuously aiming to make a true difference for individuals, our communities and the planet – every day.
Report Scope
Our Report covers our 2012 fiscal year, which is the period from January 2, 2012 to December 30, 2012 (unless otherwise noted). Reports from previous years are available
here.
We followed the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines to determine our report boundaries. In 2012, our report boundary is defined as follows:
- Entities over which Tim Hortons Inc. has control: corporate operations (including manufacturing subsidiaries, distribution facilities and offices) and our Company-owned restaurants (both leased and owned buildings). We have reported on Performance Indicators (i.e., GRI Indicators) for these entities.
- Entities over which Tim Hortons Inc. has significant influence: owner-operated restaurants and the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. We have disclosed our management approach, but not performance indicators (unless otherwise indicated), for these entities.
Joint ventures or any other entities are not included. For more details on our boundary, please see our
Value Chain.
Reporting Standards and Content
This Sustainability and Responsibility Report (Report) has been prepared in accordance with the GRI G3.1 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. At this time, a relevant Sector Supplement has not been developed for our industry. To learn more about our GRI performance, please refer to our GRI Index.
Additionally, our Report centres on our three sustainability and responsibility focus areas: Individuals, Communities and the Planet. We have also included links to useful information and resources found at TimHortons.com. In developing our Report, we’ve covered topics and issues that we believe are important to our Company and to our stakeholders. For more details on how this Report was developed, please see the Sustainability and Responsibility Process section.
Information Integrity
Tim Hortons management is responsible for the preparation and integrity of the information reported in our 2012 Sustainability and Responsibility Report. We believe this information fairly represents our sustainability and responsibility initiatives and performance results for 2012.
While select key performance indicators related to our
Tim Hortons Coffee Partnership were independently assured in the current year, we have not undertaken comprehensive assurance for our 2012 Report.

Our Making a True Difference logo
Our Making a True Difference logo represents our guiding principles and our firm commitment to individuals, our communities and the planet – our sustainability pillars.
Each pillar has a designated colour (and shape) that represents the specific attributes of each. The earth tone (guiding hand) represents Individuals, green (leaf with buildings) depicts our Communities and blue (water droplet) denotes the Planet.
The circular shape of our logo symbolizes the perpetual nature of sustainability and signifies our continuous focus on sustainability initiatives as our business and the world around us evolve.
